True Happiness

Writer's picture: Leigh GerstenbergerLeigh Gerstenberger

During a recent message at church, the pastor made reference to happiness and what makes people happy.  He suggested that most people, when asked what would make them happy, respond in three ways and reference, money, sex and power.  He went on to say that while many people feel that more of each of these qualities in their lives might make them happy, the research on happiness suggests otherwise.

He then quoted the work done at Harvard University on the topic of happiness which found that true happiness is a product of the extent to which each of the following qualities are present in our daily lives.

  • Positive social relationships

  • Meaningful and engaging work

  • Pro-social altruistic activities, i.e., volunteer work

  • Maintaining good personal health

As I listened to this message, I found beauty in its oversimplification and related very positively to each of the qualities referred to as they validated where I find myself in this season of my own life and my current level of happiness.

Shortly after hearing this message, I came across the following 3-minute video which illustrates several of these qualities and wanted to share it with you this week.  I hope it’s an encouragement to you.
