College Prep

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that the best way to educate oneself is to speak with others who’ve gone before you and who have already experienced what you know you will be experiencing.

A couple of examples of this were:

  • When my daughter was getting married, I sought out friends who had already gone through the wedding planning process to get their insights.

  • When I was facing a couple of major surgeries, I reached out to folks I knew who had already gone through the procedures.

  • As I began to contemplate retirement, I sought out friends who had already retired and were navigating that season of life’s journey.

  • And as my children began to reach college age I spoke with a number of people in my network who had already sent their children off to college to learn about the application process, finances, timelines and deadlines that we needed to be mindful of.

I was reminded of this recently when I learned about a program offered by Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA called, Closing the Gap.

Closing the Gap is a yearlong program designed to help high school juniors and seniors explore the college experience and develop the skills necessary to thrive in college or whatever lies ahead for them.  In addition, through classroom discussions, meetings with mentors and online assignments, student are equipped to better understand the value of an identity based in Christ and determine their vocational calling.

The course targets three key areas of development

  1. Intellectual Development

  2. Identity Development

  3. Faith Development

As I learned more about this unique program, I wished that either my children or I could have taken advantage of an opportunity like this before we embarked on our post high school educational pursuits.

If you know of a high school junior or senior who would benefit from a preview of what college is all about, I strongly encourage you to direct them to the following website for more information.  As you’ll see, the cost is nominal but the experience for them will, in all likelihood, be priceless.
